Cataract Surgery

What is a cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of your eye. Clouded vision can make it more difficult to do things like reading , driving  a car. The clouding of the lens that is a normal part of aging.

How do I know if I need cataract surgery?

If you’re experiencing vision problems that interfere with your daily life, such as difficulty reading, driving, or recognizing faces, it might be time to consider cataract surgery. An eye exam can determine the severity of the cataract and the appropriate treatment.

What happens during cataract surgery?

During the procedure, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL). This outpatient surgery typically takes less than 30 minutes, and most patients notice improved vision shortly after.

What is recovery like?

Most patients experience improved vision within 24–48 hours and can resume normal activities like reading and watching TV by the next day, and return to work within a one to seven days. Full recovery typically takes a few weeks. It’s important to follow post-operative instructions and attend follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing.

Is cataract surgery safe?

Yes, cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective surgical procedures. Complications are rare, and the majority of patients achieve significantly improved vision post-surgery.

Will I still need glasses after surgery?

Depending on the type of IOL implanted, you may still need glasses for certain activities, such as reading or driving at night. Multifocal and toric lenses can reduce the dependence on glasses, but some patients may still require them.

RLE may be right for you if you:

  • Are over 40 and have noticed worsening near vision

  • Rely on reading glasses or bifocals

  • Have been told you’re not a candidate for LASIK

  • Want a long-term solution to avoid cataracts in the future

LASIK reshapes the cornea, while RLE replaces the lens inside the eye. RLE is typically better for patients over 40, especially those with presbyopia or high prescriptions.
